Before going to Dublin, where he represented Wanderers and Leinster, the Cork native played the second row for UCC, Cork Constitution, and Munster. He played three Test matches for Ireland, twice against Wales in the 1986 Five Nations and once against South Africa on tour. Billy, his son, also received a cap in 2016, and he played 247 games for his province between 2007 and 2021. Jerry Holland remained active in the sport as a manager and coach even after he stopped competing as a player.

Who Was Jerry Holland?

He twice led Munster to the IRFU Interprovincial Championship while serving as head coach from 1994 to 1997. He also helped the province make the transition from the amateur period to the professional era in 1995. However, the sport’s allure persisted, and he led Ireland A in 1998–1999 before taking on the same position with Munster again in 2000. He succeeded Brian O’Brien after that season’s first Heineken Cup final appearance, a close loss to Northampton Saints at Twickenham.

As the team strengthened its name as a European powerhouse with a roster that would later go on to supply the backbone of the Ireland pack and half-backs for the better part of a decade, Holland worked closely with the coaching combination of Declan Kidney and Niall O’Donovan. Younger supporters may also be familiar with Jerry because he is the father of Billy, another club hero who only announced his retirement last year after playing 247 times for The Reds in a 14-year career with the province.

Munster released a touching statement following his passing on Sunday. It said: “We were deeply saddened to learn of Jerry Holland’s illness-related death. “Jerry was a legend in Munster for his accomplishments as a player, coach, team manager, and administrator. spot72.com also comes to the front and pays him heartfelt tributes along with extending sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.
