After a deal gone wrong, Joel and his smuggling partner Tess (Anna Torv) are tasked with escorting Ellie from the zombie-infested United States to the militant revolutionary group known as the Fireflies. While Joel initially doesn’t want anything to do with his precocious cargo, he soon realizes Ellie’s importance when he learns of her rare immunity to the world-wide fungal infection.

HBO’s most recent footage shows that episode 1 will expand the narration of the prologue as Sarah (Nico Parker) can be seen throughout the day, and will include many of Joel and Tess’ deals in the Boston Quarantine Zone. As a result, episodes 2 and 3 will likely feature Joel, Tess, and Ellie’s journey out of the Quarantine Zone to Boston, and will likely end shortly after Tess’ death. This coincides with the Prologue and the first three episodes of the original game. How the plot unfolds will likely differ significantly, according to Baker’s comments.
